The Hume & Hovell Walking Track

Discover the natural attractions of the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, camp at Lake Burrinjuck and Blowering Reservoir, explore rugged forests and National Parks or visit one of many established picnic and camping track heads.  The Hume and Hovell Walking Track was one of the main Bicentennial Projects of the Department of Land and Water Conservation.   The Track, which stretches over 440km between Yass and Albury, lets you rediscover the route of explores Hamilton Hume and William Hovell on their expedition to Port Phillip in 1824.   The Hume and Hovell Walking Track is fully signposted and provides opportunities for numerous day walks, weekend walks, or a total walk of about 24 days.

Fishing

All year for rainbow trout, brown trout and red fin on Lakes Talbingo, Blowering or Tantangara, or in season in the numerous streams running out of the foothills of the Snowy Mountains.   Some good murray cod and other native fish are caught in Blowering Dam.

Golf and Tennis

9 hole golf course and two tennis courts available at the Talbingo Country Club.

Water sports

Talbingo is the centre of immense waterways.   Talbingo, Blowering and Jounama Lakes offer 6500 hectares of recreational water for fishing and on Talbingo and Blowering water skiing, sailing, canoeing and swimming are every day activities during the warmer weather.   A magnificent, safe area has been allocated near Talbingo Dam specifically for swimmers.   The views are unbelievable and the water as clear as a bell!!

Buddong Falls

There are two sets of falls.   The walk to the lower fall is about 3km.   The lower section is quite steep and is slippery during wet weather.   The upper falls are about 20m high.   The lower falls are cascades about 60m high.   The fall occur where harder granite rock meets softer shales and slates.   The shales have been worn away by Buddong Creek.   Brumbies can be seen around this area!!

WHAT TO SEE

Lake Eucumbene

The largest lake in the Snowy Mountains.   Has nine times the capacity of Sydney Harbour.   Great for trout fishing.

Kiandra Goldfields

A number of people claimed credit for discovering gold at Kiandra in 1859 but, whoever it was, they began a rush.   By March 1860 there may have been as many as 10,000 miners in Kiandra and surrounding areas.   All that remains of Kiandra township and its mining era now are the cemetery, courthouse/goal, chimneys from Yan's Store, Matthew's Cottage, race lines, dams and mullock heaps.   A self-guided heritage walk includes signs on the sites of many of the main buildings to give visitors a sense of Kiandra as it was.   There are also mining machinery displays on the Kiandra/Cabramurra road and longer day and overnight walks to the other mining areas.
